What You Can Do With a Major in WGS

We know our students are always thinking ahead about their careers after graduation and what to do with a major or minor in WGS. We want to support our students and alums through providing resources and hosting events about internships, applying to graduate school, or navigating the job market.

WGS majors go on to work in a variety of fields. While there is no one pathway for a WGS major, compiled government data suggest the following about graduates with a WGS degree:

  • Most common professions: lawyers & other judicial workers, postsecondary teachers, elementary & middle school teachers, and management roles across a wide variety of industries.
  • Compared to other majors, an unusually high number of WGS majors go on to work and fundraise for non-profit organizations.
  • The highest-paid WGS major graduates are media and communications workers, financial service agents, surgeons, and physicians.
  • The major has been growing steadily over the past decade.

We regularly include information about internships and other job opportunities in our program email list, which is sent out 2-3 times per month. If you do not already receive WGS emails, let us know to add you.

Events

Beginning in Fall 2024, WGS will host three group meetings per semester that deal with developing career pathways with a WGS major. These meetings are targeted toward graduating WGS majors but are open to WGS minors and students of any year status.

To add your name to our contact list for career events, email our Associate Director, Dr. Alexandra Chiasson.
